Preservation and Protection of Your Antiques

Caring for your antiques is of utmost importance if you want them to be preserved in the best condition possible. Caring for antiques includes storage or display and cleaning and repair. Some antiques require more care than others. Take antique jewelry, for instance. The care of a single piece of antique diamond jewelry might only include occasional cleaning and if it is worn on a regular basis, inspection for weakened prongs or links. But an antique walnut tall clock needs regular maintenance and cleaning so that it continues to run and the cabinet requires oil so that it doesn't dry out and crack so depending on what kind of antiques you have, your care of them will vary.

Some antique documents need very special care in the way that they are displayed or stored. Vary rare and delicate papers should not be exposed to sunlight, dry heat or handling as they will deteriorate from exposure. In extreme cases as with the U.S. Declaration of Independence, a bullet proof environmentally controlled case was specially designed to protect the antique document from both theft and damage due to vandalism and/or the environment. Caring for your own personal family antique documents may be as important to you as the historic national treasures are to a country, but you do not have to go to such extreme measures in caring for your antique documents. Just basically, keep them dry, away from direct sunlight and out of the reach of children and pets and you should be alright for many generations.

An antique blown glass pitcher requires very little in the way of care. Primarily, you want to keep in a place where it is least likely to be broken and for appearances sake, caring for an antique such as this, washing it in warm soapy water not and then to keep dust and soot from accumulating on it will make it more pleasant to look at. Perhaps caring for antique glassware should include storing or displaying it in a glass door cupboard so it won't get broken or dirty and you can still enjoy looking at it as much as you like.

Antique cars are high maintenance when it comes to their care. First you want to restore your antique car if you have purchased or inherited one that is not in pristine condition. And once your antique car is restored, you will want to take great care of it so that all your hard work or big investment won't be wasted. The body and upholstery of your antique car will need cleaning and protection from sun and weather. And caring for the mechanics of your antique car isn't that different than caring for a modern car. Routine maintenance and safety checks should keep it in running order.
