Collecting Antique Jewelry

Antique jewelry is possibly valued more now than it was in its original day. Antique jewelry has history. Antique jewelry has personality. Antique jewelry has distinctive style. Besides the wear value of each piece of antique jewelry, chances are it is worth a bit of money too. There are many periods in history that defined the way people spoke, talked, studied, socialized and dressed. And it goes without saying, really, that included in the style of dress of the times, the style of the jewelry followed suit. So all antique jewelry is not alike.

There is primitive jewelry, which is antique and dates back to pre-history, but the artifact itself tells the story. Pieces of antique jewelry from Central America depicted images that were important to the people of that region. The same is true for the jewelry recovered from ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. The antique specimens that survived and are available for the public to see show worshipped animals, gods and goddesses and symbols that were all significant when the jewelry was created. Not many private citizens actually own pieces of this sort of antique jewelry, but many fine reproductions have been made of the actual pieces that are in museums around the world.

Through the ages, styles of jewelry came and went. One extremely significant change occurred during the eighteenth century. A man named vincenzp Peruzzi invented a new way to cut a diamond. He introduced the brilliant cut which is still popular today. Diamonds went from having sixteen facets to having fifty six facets thus catching and reflecting light more effectively. This new brilliant cut made jewelry fitted with diamonds reach a new level of popularity and increased the demand for diamonds drastically.

Although it might be a rare event to actually see and handle items of antique jewelry of this vintage, you don't need an antique piece to own a diamond that has been cut in the style invented back in the seventeen hundreds. An era in history that produced some beautiful jewelry and left us with quite an abundance of antique specimens that many of us own and enjoy was the Victorian era. Antiques from this period are very popular and are not limited to antique jewelry, but also furniture and vintage clothing as well.
