Collecting Antique Dolls

Antique dolls are wonderful for collecting. Antique dolls are appealing to collectors of all ages. Some antique dolls are just for show and some are great for play. If you have antique dolls that have been in your family for generations, they are wonderful to pass down to the children of the next generation. Antique dolls can have sentimental value or real monetary value or both. If your antique dolls are rare and valuable, then you probably want to take special care of them as they will appreciate as time goes on. But even if they are very valuable, if you have a child in your life that would enjoy playing with the antique doll, careful play will not necessarily spoil your doll. Use caution and touch the doll with clean hands. If the antique doll that you are allowing a child to play with has no hair, all the better as there is less chance for damaging the doll. Antique dolls that are baby dolls tend to be the ones that are irresistible to small children, but character dolls, fashion dolls and cloth dolls are also very popular.

Some antique dolls are extremely collectible. Antique versions of the Shirley Temple doll, for instance is quite desirable. Also antique Madame Victoria dolls are extremely collectible and worth quite a lot of money. In addition there are character dolls like Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind or Madeline from the story books of Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans. These characters are as timeless as any and the dolls of both are enormously popular. But in addition to well known character dolls, there are also many dolls that are only famous by their designers or made famous by millions upon millions of marketing and advertising dollars. But these dolls have become collectible antique dolls in their own right.

There are many places beyond your grandmother's trunk to find antique dolls. Antique stores and malls, estate sales, traveling antiques shows and of course, the internet. Where you shop for your antique dolls is entirely up to you. Whether you like to sit in the comfort of your home to do your shopping or whether you like to get out in the world and shop around doesn't matter, there will be places to find your antique dolls either way. In addition to buying and collecting antique dolls, there is a lot of history and information to be learned about them as well and there are stacks and stacks of books and even magazines written that will satisfy your interest in the subject of antique dolls.
