Collecting Antique Documents

Antique documents are extremely interesting for not only their value, their content, but also for the circumstances around their creation, existence and preservation. Often antique documents are just kept by family members through the generations or they are of an official nature and preserved by the government, museums or historical societies. One of the most famous antique documents in the United States is the Declaration of Independence. This antique document has been preserved with great care over the years. It resides in the National Archives in Washington D.C. with other irreplaceable antique documents that have become national treasures such as the Constitution and the Charter of Freedom.

Other antique documents that are of interest and particular value are the Bill of Rights, The Magna Carta and the Paris Peace Treaty of 1783. But antique documents are not always or necessarily historical documents of a grand nature. Families often preserve Birth Certificates, Marriage Licenses, Land Deeds and wills and pass them down through the generations and they become treasured antique documents to that particular family. Often these antique documents add interest and value to articles possessed by an individual associated with the antique document.

Sometimes, on the Antiques Roadshow, a person will bring in an antique photograph or something else and with it they will have related antique documents. The expert on the show often remarks that the existence of the antique document enhances the article in many ways, including authenticating the item by reference in the accompanying document.

So whether you save all your documents by design or randomly, your heirs may be happy that you did because one day those documents of yours will tell a story or at least maybe fill in some blanks about you, your family and your life. This will have meaning in the future and will be appreciated as time goes on. And in this age of technology and a move towards a paperless society, the existence of actual physical documents may become obsolete, so the future of antique documents is up to the people of today.
