Collecting Antique Clocks

Antique clocks are wonderful objects and when they are either maintained throughout the years or restored back to working condition, they make great items for your home. There aren't many people who don't respond well to the ticking and chiming of a great antique clock. Antique clocks come in an endless array of styles, shapes and sizes. There are many categories of antique clocks and within any given category there are literally hundreds and hundreds of variations of that clock. Because there were many gifted and prized clock makers throughout history, there are groups of clocks created by each which extends the possibilities of antique clocks to learn about and hope to collect.

If you want to really get into antique clocks, meaning you want to collect them, but also repair them, then you have to go to clock and/or watch school to learn the trade. There was a time when you could study as an apprentice, but as the numbers of antique clocks out on the market diminishes due to growing collections, the need to train new apprentices in the field has diminished and now there are only a couple of places where you can learn the art of restoring and repairing antique clocks.

Clocks have been a traditional gift for several occasions such as weddings, anniversaries and house warming parties. It doesn't really matter what the decor of a home is if you want to add an antique clock to it as there are so many styles of antique clocks depending on the period or part of the world they are from. Before investing in an antique clock for yourself or someone else, considering the look and feel of the room where the clock will live is an important consideration. If the antique clock will sit on a mantle in the living room of a colonial style home, then a gingerbread clock might be just the ticket. If you are planning to install a grandfather clock in your entryway and you have your home done in the scheme of art nouveau, then you could have considered the art nouveau hand carved oak corner grandfather clock that was recently sold at auction on eBay. This antique clock would have been the perfect choice.

Antique clocks come in mantle style, vanity or dresser style, wall clocks, including the famous cuckoo clock, travel clocks and even antique clock radios. Each type of antique clock has a history and a hobby of collecting antique clocks or a business of buying and selling antique clocks can be quite narrow and specific or can include a wide range of these timeless antique treasures.
